Young Memphis Profile ยป
TROY GLASGOW
Mauricio Calvo
Director of Latino Memphis
by JON SPARKS
Mauricio is at the forefront of representing the Hispanic community in Memphis, while understanding that his advocacy is about the entire city.

"Our impact is on the Latino community, yes, but also the whole community," he said. "Latino Memphis is creating new partnerships and strengthening the ones we have. We are all about collaborating. No agency has the size and resources and expertise to do everything, so you have to work with other people. For example, we have done some key partnerships with law enforcement and health providers to create leverage."

Mauricio came here 18 years ago to attend Christian Brothers University and now says he doesn't want to live anywhere else.

He wants to make sure "Latinos take advantage of all that Memphis has to offer and show how Memphis can become a better city by embracing the richness of this new culture."

The main thing for him, though, is that Memphis is large enough to offer a variety of diversity and cultural experience. "People are friendly and there is so much to be done you have an opportunity to make a difference and that's really cool.”
