For years, Memphis has told the world our story through blues and barbeque, but on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, a new Memphis narrative was celebrated. The “Greening Our Gateways” Tree Planting Ceremony played host to over 50 community and business leaders, elected officials, and airport authority officials in celebration of the new landscape improvements of Plough Blvd.
“With the redevelopment of Plough Blvd., the greening of our gateways, and the new air traffic control tower, Memphis is getting a second chance on its first impression,” said Harold Collins, Memphis City Council Chairman. This new narrative tells the story of Memphis through logistics and how Memphis is America’s Aerotropolis.
Arnold Perl, Chairman of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, has said it many times, but, felt it was definitely worth saying again, “One out of every three jobs in the Memphis area is directly related to the strength of this airport.” Memphis International Airport is the economic engine for this Greater Memphis region. Unlike many other airports, the Memphis International Airport is the only airport in the country that serves as both a passenger and a cargo hub. Celebratory remarks were also shared by Dr. Shirley Raines, University of Memphis President and John W. Moore, President & CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber.
