Surviving the Summer heat

There is no hiding from the heat in Memphis during the summer. The first week of really hot and humid weather always catches us off guard. We all learn to cope and survive. We exercise early in the day to beat the soaring heat index. We seek out the shady paths and trails on which to walk or run. In order to continue to exercise and stay fit in the summer it is vital that you develop a hydration strategy. To stay properly hydrated before, during and after exercise you have to pay attention to your fluid intake seven days a week. The quality of your fluid intake is just as important as the quantity.

How do you develop a hydration strategy and continue to stay fit and healthy in the heat of a Memphis summer?

As a follower of the Chamber and all the great things they do - what a great idea to integrate & promote the fitness / endurance lifestyle in the mid-south. As for how I stay fit over the summer, sign up for the Memphis Runners Road Race Series! There is nothing better to keep you motivated thru the dog days of summer.

in addition to additional fluid intake, I took your advice of adding a GU tab to one of my water bottles. The additional sodium and potassium is a big aid to staying comfortable for added mileage. Thanks for the tips.

After learning the hard way last summer, blacked out during a bike ride, I did my research and hydration is my #1 priority.

Being properly hydrated is one of the most important things we neglect as residents in a super hot and humind climate. Very fitting 1st edition.
