Memphis has one of the largest, most passionate running communities in the nation. There are many reasons, but a big contributing factor is the
Memphis Runners Track Club (MRTC). The MRTC is one of the largest
Road Runners Clubs of America sanctioned running clubs in the nation. The MRTC serves as the “hub” of the local and regional running community. They promote, manage and help to spread the gospel of running.
How does the MRTC keep Memphis Fit?
Their website lists the
MRTC Race Calendar,
Places to Run,
Group Runs and
Race Results.
Women’s Run/ Walk Program – This 10-week training program is for beginning walkers and runners and culminates with a Graduation 5K. This excellent program, which is an excellent introduction to walking and running for thousands of women, received the
2010 RRCA Beginning Runner's Program Award.
Road Race Series – This series of progressively longer races is a perfect training progression for runners preparing for the
St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend in December. The series attracts nearly 2,000 runners at 7 am every other Sunday from July to November.
MRTC Frank Horton Memorial Scholarship Fund – The MRTC supports a scholarship benefiting a competitive runner who has 'used up' their competitive eligibility as a runner, but not yet obtained their Bachelors degree. Coach Horton was a long time running and track coach in the Memphis area.
St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend – The MRTC manages the race in conjunction with St Jude. The race has grown and flourished under this partnership and the race attracts 16,000 runners from across the country each December.
Winter Cross Country Series – A series of four races on various trails around town. This fun and challenging series has seen sun, rain, snow, ice, mud and a creek crossing! It is these variables that make it such a memorable series of runs.
The MRTC will be hosting the
2011 Road Runners Club of America National Convention March 15 – 18, 2012. This convention draws runners, race directors and running industry representatives from across the nation. This event will be another excellent opportunity to show the country that Memphis is a running town!
