You’re young. You can still vividly remember what it feels like to pull an all-nighter before a killer final.
You’re motivated. You don’t want to spend the next five years running for coffee and barely making rent while you wait for your “big break.”
You’re energetic. You love the thrill of new experiences and take advantage of what little free time you have.
You’re a young professional. And you’re looking for a place to live where you can fulfill your potential.
Your answer? Memphis.
I know because I am one of you. Fresh out of college, I followed my new husband to Memphis, and I honestly had no idea what to expect.
What I found through my assimilation as a transplant Memphian is an incredibly low cost of living and a high job growth rate. And becoming the new Communications Specialist for the Greater Memphis Chamber has opened my eyes to the many opportunities this city has to offer.
Memphis provides the experiences of a big city with the price tag of a small town, leaving your heart happy, your hands busy and your wallet full and giving you three reasons to make it your new home:
1. Cost of Living.
And these are only the top three. Find even more reasons to choose Memphis by checking out the Chamber’s Bragging Rights, and be sure to follow @MemphisChamber on twitter—you’ll see my tweets signed with /jf.
I know that diploma hanging proudly on your wall came with a high price tag, and you’re anxious to rid yourself of any leftover debt. Good news for you, Memphis is ranked the fourth most affordable city to live in the nation, according to the Council for Community and Economic Research. So instead of pouring all your funds into groceries, rent, utilities, gas, healthcare, etc., you can work on becoming debt-free and financially secure.
2. Job Opportunities.
It doesn’t matter how low the rent is if you don’t have a job to pay for it. Many research agencies and publications have Memphis top-ranked for job growth, including the Gallup Job Creation Index, which named it the third-most hiring metropolitan in 2011 with 38 percent of companies reporting to be hiring. Memphis also creates the perfect environment for big names like FedEx and International Paper as well as those looking to start and grow a new business. So whether you’re into big business or looking to get your feet wet in entrepreneurship, Memphis has you covered.
3. Unique Experiences.
As much as you love advancing your career, you also crave exhilarating experiences outside the eight-to-five workday. Sports fans can check out a variety of events and activities, from Memphis Grizzlies games to our enthusiastic cycling community. Music connoisseurs can satisfy their tastes in the city with the most musicians per capita. Those wishing to just hang out with friends can enjoy the night life of Beale Street or the cool, eclectic flavor of the Cooper-Young District. Whatever your taste or pleasure, Memphis has your answer.
